User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050822 Firefox/1.0.6 (Debian package 1.0.6-3)
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050822 Firefox/1.0.6 (Debian package 1.0.6-3)

In a subfolder of my personal toolbar folder, I have a link to the local
directory, file:///usr/share/doc/, which has 1348 subdirectories. With Mozilla
Seamonkey, this link opens a view of the directory in the browser window, within
a fraction of a second. Entires are sorted in alphabetical order.

With Firefox, moving the mouse over this link (whether aiming for it or not)
causes the machine to freeze for several seconds, with a lot of disk activity.
During this time firefox won't yield focus to any other program. When it has
finished it opens a toolbar subfolder containing the directories in a random
order. This would be useless behaviour, even if it was quick. It seriously
reduces the usability of the toolbar.

After the subfolder has been opened once, it is quicker to reappear, presumably
due to caching.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a subfolder in the personal toolbar folder, and put a link in it to a
reasonably populous local directory (in this case /usr/share/doc/).
2. move the mouse over the link.
3. wait.

Actual Results:
machine freezes for some seconds, unusable menu appears.

Expected Results:
the link should open in the normal way, as if it was written into the url bar,
or was the href of a link. This should happen quickly, as it does in those
cases. The listing should be sorted in some sensible fashion, such as
alphabetically.
This feature has been removed in 1.9, suggest INVALID or WFM or (if the details are known) DUPLICATE or FIXED by the bug that did so, unless it's been fixed before that.

PS: It does happen on Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8.1.7pre) Gecko/20070813 BonEcho/2.0.0.7pre, but is extremely unlikely to be changed there.
Aleksej, what bug was this feature removed in? Can you find it and link to it here?
It seems to have gone when enabling Bookmarks on Places: trunk 20070518…20070519.

One of the related bugs is bug 177213 -- see mentions of other bugs there.

Thanks for looking that up Aleksej.

Let's close this as WORKSFORME since it's fixed on trunk. Feel free to file a new bug if this regresses.
