The only way to clear it was to set IE as the default browser and then restart firefox and tell it to make it the default browser. Reproducible: Always

I've tried to reproduce this several times and cannot. The first time I installed Seer Park Alpha 2, made it the default, then installed the latest branch 1.5 b1 candidate and when it launched I OK'd making it the default and all worked. The second time I tried to reproduce I installed 1.0.6, then installed Deer Park Alpha 2 on top of my Firefox 1.0.6 then installed the latest branch 1.5 b1 candidate on top of that and still my browser default with windows was Firefox and everything worked. Reporter, can you please describe exactly what your install process looked like so I can try to reproduce? Did you perform installs to custom directories or perform any uninstalls?
I had installed a recent deer park alpha nightly. I had downloaded the renamed nightly build. Before changing my default browser, I deleted Deer Park by using the add/remove programs control panel. At this point, I noticed my Internet application on the Start menu was a deer park alpha icon with no name. When I clicked on it, I would be presented with Firefox's preferences. I then changed the default to IE to reset it and then it let me use Firefox as default. I think that the rebranding fooled windows, and could potentially confuse someone.

IMO, this shouldn't block, its an issue only affecting people upgrading from alpha/testing builds, there's a similar weirdness for Mac, but we're not fixing that either.

Sounds like this one: Bugzilla Bug 307512 Updater doesn't remove the "Deer Park" on WinXP add/remove programs and replace with Firefox beta
