Greg,
Please check your system for spy ware and viruses, for spy ware I recommend http://www.safer-networking.org/en/spybotsd/index.html
I'm able to duplicate it every time by clearing History, Cache, and Cookies with Tools > Clear Private Data between restarts.

To get the described behavior to appear type a word, click search. A pop-up will be blocked, than click on the home link on the left hand side of the page and the pop-up ad will appear, but the window will remain under the main window. The same behavior is described in bug 474604.
