Does this still occur after you close both Firefox and Eudora and restart them? Also, is there anything else that would be causing this? I'm pretty sure you can set this behavior in Windows somewhere...

re: comment #1 ria: did you test this with eudora? re: comment #2 closing and restarting doesn't help. upgrading firefox was the only change i made to see this behavior.

FWIW, I see this behavior in Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20060214 Firefox/1.5 ID:2006021404. Links that I click in Thunderbird open in the background. It's a bit disconcerting, because at first it appears that nothing happened.

I see this in Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a4pre) Gecko/20070417 Minefield/3.0a4pre. If the window is unfocused but visible, the tab is created inside of it, but the window doesn't get focus. If the window is minimized, the tab is created and the title is updated, but the window doesn't restore (and therefore the focus doesn't switch, either).

wfm nowadays, external links sometimes don't open at all (https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=Firefox+already%20running), but when they do, FF does get focus alright
