About 50% of the time, when I close Firefox, there appears a pop up ad behind
the  Firefox window.  The ad appears to come from Mozilla Firefox but is
advertising various different things.

It seems to be more prevalent when you have been working with FIrefox for a while.

It is annoying but not deadly. 

Reproducible: Sometimes

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open Firefox
2. Work with Firefox for a while
3. Close Firefox and there it is

Actual Results:  
Ad was there.  Closed it

Expected Results:  
There should haev been no advertisement.

This is most likely caused by either the site(s) you are visiting when you close
Firefox or software (i.e., adware, spyware, etc.) that you have installed on
your computer.  Can you look into this and let us know the details?

I don't really understand what you mean.
Mozilla FireFox does not by default show advertisements.
If you are indeed getting any ads it is rather because a website bypassing the
popu blocker in the browser.
