20050913 trunk
Open a new compose window using mailto: and tab from subject to body. You will
now have two cursors blinking - one in the subject and one in the body. See bug
303976.
If you open a compose window from Thunderbord directly this problem does not appear.

Also cannot paste into any field of the compose window. Using menu, context
menu, or CTRL+V all fail.

No. Mail composition windows opened by mailto: are still hokey using 20060912 trunk. For instance, the arrow keys and the page up & down keys do not work in such a window until you defocus and refocus it. Then, after you do that, there will be a caret in both places. Also gets horked after dragging an attachment onto the composition window.

Jerry, couple questions:
1. if your report in comment 0 is correct then the conclusion in bug 303976 Comment 11 is (probably) incorrect. Do you agree with the description and conclusion in bug 303976?
2. did your problem never go away between then (2005) and now (20060912)?

I believe that it was never fixed. This bug was filed only a few days after it was reported that this bug had mysteriously been fixed, so my suspicion is that it wasn't ever really fixed. I can't say with any authority that it was broken the whole time though.
Now, it's a lot more difficult to get the two cursors. It doesn't just start out that way, but a number of navigations through the various panes will occasionally produce it. The other symptoms remain the same (cannot paste, use HOME, END, or arrow keys in the composition window). Minimizing and restoring the window fixes it.
It seems to be some sort of focus issue. If you tab into the composition area and then SHIFT+TAB to back out, the first press is always eaten (i.e., nothing happens).
