Details
Thunderbird Version 1.5 Beta 1 (20050908) If you select offline mode and then try to subscribe to folders in newsgroups or IMAP folders, thunderbird still tries to connect although unsuccessfully as Thunderbird is in offline mode. What should happen: Subscribe is disabled when in offline mode.

This is mostly fixed in version 60.8. No idea how long ago the change was made.
I set Thunderbird to working offline. It displayed a blank screen for the subscriptions to a IMAP account, and refresh had no effect.
When I tried to use manage subscriptions for a feed account I could enter another URL. When I press Add I get "You are currently offline. Do you want to go online to get new messages".
The list of newsgroup subscriptions was not empty. However, when I hit refresh it cleared the screen and displayed "You are currently offline". I tried again where (while offline) I checked the checkbox to subscribe mozilla.support.thunderbird and pressed the OK key. It should have failed. When I switched back to working online I can see it was subscribed.
