WFM, this is almost certainly something wrong that is not firefox's fault.
Please check your firewall, network and proxy settings, and follow the standard
procedures at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic

Also you may want to try a newer version of firefox like 1.5 beta 1.

Tested on:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050716
Firefox/1.0.6 ID:2005071605
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b4) Gecko/20050915
Firefox/1.4 ID:2005091506

Four people in completely different geographic locations and with completely
different configurations have reported this as WFM. Therefore, it's logical to
assume that the problem is on your end. Check out the procedures in comment 5 or
take a look at the MozillaZine forums (http://forums.mozillazine.org) for end
user support.
