The history button in firefox could be modified with a drop down menu expanding
to folders for sites and individual titles for pages (similar to the menus
followed elsewhere).  This will do away with the necessity of opening a separate
history window /pane (which could be retained for advanced use - search, setting
the sort order/method of showing items).  Perhaps some limit (recent .. no. of
sites/pages) could be set to the menu to avoid it growing beyond usability levels.

This is a neat idea, but beyond the level of complexty we're going to accept for
our UI.
