What is the extensions.reporter.serviceURL pref set to?

That error is only used when there's a SOAP error communicating with the server.
 Unless there's a SOAP issue on mac that I'm not aware of (I see no issues on my
mac), I don't see how it can happen.

I assume there is an internet connection (that might trigger this error if there
is no net connection, but then you would have no website to report).
