User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7 Build Identifier: unknown (Firefox 1.0.6) [Please note that this bug report is on version 1.0.6 of Firefox, but it is the nature of the bug that it can only be reported for old versions, not the latest version. Because I currently have 1.0.7, and I downloaded 1.0.6 through the automatic updater, I do not know what the Build Identifier for the 1.0.6 software was.] After learning there was a critical security update to Firefox (that is, version 1.0.7 came into existence), and not getting any automatic report of an update existing from Firefox, I went into the Tools -> Options -> Advanced -> Software Update and clicked "Check Now". FF proceeded to detect and download a supposed update for an extension I had installed, Linky, but did not mention any other updates, so I wrongly assumed I had the critical update already. Repeated attempts to run "Check Now" continued to download this update for Linky (IIRC, Linky "1.7.0"), which never successfully installed on restarting Firefox. This was true even after I tried unchecking the "periodically check" flags for extensions in an attempt to get it to check the browser. (This may be a bug in that extension, but that's not relevant to this bug; browser updates should not be broken by extensions.) This was true for multiple attempts across multiple days. After uninstalling the Linky extension, "check now" successfully reported the Firefox 1.0.7 critical security upgrade and allowed me to download it. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: best guess: 1. Install FF 1.0.6 2. Install last version of Linky for FF 1.0.6. (2.6.0, maybe. I don't know, since I uninstalled it. http://gemal.dk/mozilla/linky.html ) 3. Check for updates

This looks like bug 288054. Did you have http://gemal.dk/ in your list of sites allowed to install software?

(In reply to comment #1) http://gemal.dk/ is not on my whitelist of sites-allowed-to-install. However, this did not result in a hang, which is what bug 288054 describes. It appeared to download and install an extension update, with the 'must restart firefox to update' comment at the end. I was able to continue using the browser and the prefs and such to my heart's content. (But restarting firefox resulted in no change in Linky, and checking again repeated the process from the beginning.)

Closing out bugs in the old style updater, which are superseded by the new system in 1.5.
