Doesn't sound like a security bug, clearing flag so more people can see this and
maybe have it ring some bells.

Since you flagged this as a security bug, know that your java version 1.4.2_05
is horribly insecure and exploits that target it are fairly common in the wild,
typically installing backdoor software. You must IMMEDIATELY
1) turn off Java. If you want java then:
2) go to http://java.com and upgrade your java
3) make sure java's update notification feature is ON
4) Do a complete virus and spyware scan (two separate programs)
4) avoid shady sites both before and after the upgrade, but
especially before. Software/music/video/"warez" sites are common
places for exploits -- they're already doing shady stuff, hosting a few
hack attempts isn't going to make it any worse since the maintainers
obviously think they aren't going to get caught or are immune from
prosecution (many of these sites turn out to be hosted in Russia
eastern Europe, China, etc. What are you going to do?).

There's often a long pause opening external media viewers (Adobe Acrobat for
PDFs in particular), especially when they display the content in a browser
window rather than opening a separate window owned by that program. Is this
random, or could it be associated with some action like that?
