I have found on two occasions that when I launch mozilla mail, the most recent
messages do not appear in the list. It is as if they have been lost. However,
when I imported all my settings into thunderbird, and then looked, the messages
were there, so they must have been hidden by mozilla.

Reproducible: Sometimes
Note that I used firefox to report the bug, but it is nothing to do with firefox
or thunderbird, this problem is with mozilla mail
Note also that these missing messages never reappeared with mozilla. The only
way I got to see them again the first time was to deleted the account, re-create
it, and then download the messages again from the server, where I keep the last
year's worth of messages
Which Mozilla/SM version/build? IMAP or POP?

I guess your index files are corrupt, so Mozilla does not display the msgs.
Please try to delete the index files (.msf) for that account (close Moz
before) and restart. Mozilla recreates the index files. Does that help?

No that didn't help. There is a missing group of messages between the 19 and 23
of September (exclusive)

I am using pop3. The build information is in build identifier.

I think I am having trouble with this same bug. I will try to give you some more details. When I "Get New Messages" in the mozilla mail client sometimes the messages do not appear and it seems that my Inbox gets corrupted as the client downloads the new messages from the server. I am using a POP mail server.

I'll try to attach a screenshot (MozScreen.png) showing what I see in the mail client window when this happens. The last two messages have no subject or sender. This is typical. A lot of messages that have been moved to my junk folder also appear in this way and have been corrupted in the same way.

Now looking at the Inbox folder itself. It seems that part of the headers of these corrupted messages appear in the wrong place in the file. Here is a section of my Inbox that shows what I mean (message continues after paste):

How's it going Zubin,

I bet you're wanting a clue what I've picked up on last night.

I have been searching for this for quite some time, but I finally got it at

X-Mozilla-Status: 0000
X-Mozilla-Status2: 00000000

parts of the messages that should appear at the start are displaced to appear half way through the previous message.

The problem only occurs occasionally and only seems to happen when I have not checked mail for a while and have a lot of messages to download from the server.

I am running a build I downloaded earlier this week:

22 ucacdxa@timbala% ./mozilla -v
Mozilla 1.7.12, Copyright (c) 2003-2004 mozilla.org, build 2005092014

I am using a PC running Linux.

Hope you can help me!

I just filed an additional comment about this bug which refers to this attachment. It is a screen shot showing what happens when the bug occurs. The last two messages in the list have no subject or sender, which is because the Inbox folder is corrupted when I download the messages from the server.
reporter, Ian: "stopped using mozilla mail because of this bug. ... I now use thunderbird."

daniel: "Not [seen] since I switched to imap"

if the problem was backend then one would expect thunderbird to have the same problem, so closing this WFM based on reporter's experience with thunderbird.
