Sometimes TB seems to think you've double clicked if you click with the left,
then the right buttom rapidly:

1. hover your mouse over a folder with sub folders
2. left click
3. immediately right click without moving the mouse
4. notice the folder will unfold to show subfolders (or fold up if it was
unfolded already) as if you had double clicked on it
Bug 200921 is about this same problem in the suite's MailNews, but it's probably 
some sort of core bug.  Note that actually double-clicking on a folder does not 
expand/collapse the subfolder tree, it opens a new three-pane window.

On the Mac you can double-right-click on a folder in the folder pane and it will collapse/open a folder (it also opens the right-click context menu).

You can also do as the original submitted stated and left-click, then right-click within your double-click timer and it will collapse/open a folder (and also display the right-click context menu).

To verify this was ONLY in the folder pane, I double-right-clicked a message and only got the expected right-click context menu, it did not open the message as it does on a double-left-click.

So, I VERIFY this bug for the Mac actually, and do not believe it works as intended. (Though I will say in my opinion, I'm not sure it is worth fixing.)
I just verified it still happens if you do a quick rightclick-leftclick in a rocking motion so they happen very fast.  this is windows XP with thunderbird 2.0.0.21
OK. I can repro on windows but had to be more aggressive - I think it must be fast enough that the context menu hasn't already come up. reopening, but refraining for now from marking this OS=all

I can repro on MacOS 10.7.4 with TB 17.0.3, and it's an incredibly annoying bug, and has been for ages.
I see much less than normal Importance for a problem what is so difficult to reproduce (except for Bitt Faulk)
NOT reproducible with WIN7 64bit and German 31.5.0.
Also not reproducible in "Bug 200921 - left click followed by right click in folder pane is taken as a double click "
I also did some experiments with different mouse settings - without success.
I do not understand Comment 5 " ... context menu hasn't already come up" for a 'leftclick -> rightclick' operation. 

Can we really be sure that reporters only can reproduce the problem with Mozilla softwar, not also with different one? And if yes, any idea why only in that folder structure and not also at other  places (for example email thread pane, where click selects, double click opens stand alone window and rightclick shows context menu?

Due to Comment 1 and results in Bug 200921 I think this problem should be investigated under a common Core bug.
Not reproducible with UbuntuLinux 14.04, Thunderbird v31.4.0.
I wonder whether this problem also can be observed in "safe mode" with inactive Addons.

Hallow. my Thunderbird under winXPsp3 behavies like described above:
at starting, or at some loading of CPU work on filters or local archive, every second single-mouse-click treats as double-clicking. so i cant`t just selects some messages - second click forces to open selected messages in their own tabs. it need to awaitng some time to prevent mouse click from accepting as double.

i need to note: my system looks slooow - it uses DDR400 memory. this bug less disturbing at low CPU loads

you should remove test pilot addon.
