User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.10) Gecko/20050716 Firefox/1.0.6 Build Identifier: Mozilla Thunderbird version 1.0.6 (20050716) this bug could be related to bug 285822, but i couldnt get definite confirmation on talk page for that bug. also, even though they are related, i suspect they are separate bugs. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. create a folder with 10,000+ messages (may work with less) 2. inside this folder, create 3 virtual folders (or saved searches, whatever you want to call it), using any criteria, each filtering for 10-90% of the messages. 3. click on the 3 virtual folders one after another in rapid succession (one click per second or faster), till thunderbird crashes. (typically takes 4-5 clicks) Actual Results: Thunderbird crashes Expected Results: start search for the last clicked virtual folder tested it 86 times, trying to find some pattern in the crashes. for 10 k messages, at one click per second, takes avg 4 clicks to crash for 9 k messages, same results for 6 k messages, at one click per second, couldnt crash, but at 2 clicks per second, takes 5 clicks. for 4 k messages, at one click per second, couldnt crash. at 2 clicks per second, crashed twice, after 41 and 62 clicks respectively. at 3 clicks per second, crashes in 6 clicks. for 2 k messages, why dont you do the tests and tell me :) quality feedback agent is on. mozilla 1.0.6, only one extension mnenhy 0.7.2, tb was in online mode at time of tests, but not sending receiving messages. machine is 2.3 ghz on winxp pro sp1. also, i have a medical condition which causes me to kill all unnecessary processes when my machine boots ;) any comments?? ciao demi

Could you please provide a talkback ID for the crash? http://kb.mozillazine.org/Talkback

Could you post another crash? This one doesn't seem to be too useful. Just make sure the ID is actually caused by the issue described here, and not some other crash.
tb9737178q i just crashed tb like described in my bug to generate this talkback. ciao demi
demi: i'm not sure why, but your build doesn't have symbols on the talkback server. if it isn't an official release, please get an official release. if it is an official release, try a branch nightly. you have at least 3 different kinds of crashes, but w/o symbols, there's nothing we can do. for reference, crashes by demi can be found under: [@ 0x00000026] [@ 0x00000001] [@ 0x00000000] sig: 0x00000000 27abe568 [@ xpcom.dll + 0x42c18] [@ thunderbird.exe + 0x503a84] [@ thunderbird.exe + 0x43d08e] [@ thunderbird.exe + 0x503a84]
hi, afraid it is the official version 1.0.6 v(20050716) downloaded from the official mozilla site. can you tell me where i can download the nightly build. since i am in office now, i cant risk nightly builds here, but will do it first thing when i reach home tonight (abt 1300 hrs gmt). i have no idea what these numbers are...i hope they are meant for developers and not for me. for reference, crashes by demi can be found under: [@ 0x00000026] [@ 0x00000001] [@ 0x00000000] sig: 0x00000000 27abe568 [@ xpcom.dll + 0x42c18] [@ thunderbird.exe + 0x503a84] [@ thunderbird.exe + 0x43d08e] [@ thunderbird.exe + 0x503a84] also, have not tried thunderbird 1.5 beta till now. will experiment on that also, and let you know the results. ciao demi
yeah, the numbers are more for triagers than anyone else. devs can't really do much with them either. in decreasing order of preference for us: these are the current trunk nightlies: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-trunk this should be 1.5 branch candidates: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-mozilla1.8 this should be 1.0 branch latest (the url you requested): http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-aviary1.0.1
ok, these results are on my home computer. winxp pro sp2, 1.61 ghz machine, with lots of junk program, so actually a little slow. what i did was this. during lunch break i downloaded 1) thunderbird version 1.0.6 (20050716) from the mozilla website 2) the current trunk nightly from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-trunk 3) the 1.5 branch candidate from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-mozilla1.8 4) the 1.0 branch latest (the url you requested) from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/nightly/latest-aviary1.0.1 and installed them in separate directories, all in d:, on my home computer using RemoteDesktopConnection. thunderbird 1.5 beta 1 was already installed in the default c:/program files. they all access the same profile. folder ^Tonnage has 10,163 messages. virtual folder "single vsl" searches for 2543 messages(although the bottom right indicator shows 2543 only 50% of the time; this may be a separate bug, but let that rest) virtual folder "Small Handy" searches for 6183 messages virtual folder "TURKEY" searches 1067 messages all these virtual folders are subfolders of ^Tonnage. another possibly useful piece of information is that i have a utility called popfile sitting between my mail server and thunderbird, and it adds 2 headers to every email. however, the search criteria in the virtual folders dont search for these. 1)a)for version 1.0.6 talkback id: tb9783908y (achieved crash by changing folders using up/down keys instead of mouse) 1)b)for version 1.0.6 talkback id: tb9783992h (achieved crash by normal method of clicking on virtual subfolders one after another) 2)for trunk nightly build couldnt crash (appears to me that the program stores the clicks in some place, and then feeds the clicks slowly to itself slowly later, since the folders kept changing for some time after i had finished clicking) 3)for the 1.5 branch candidate could not crash 4)for the 1.5 beta 1 could not crash 5)a)for the 1.0.6 aviary, talkback id: tb9784554z (achieved by normal method of clicking) 5)b)for the 1.0.6 aviary, talkback id: tb9784606x (achieved by changing folders using up/down keys) quite clearly, the problem has been resolved for the next version of thunderbird. my apologies for submitting the bug without testing on the nightly trunk. probably had some illogical fear that nightly builds could cause all sorts of nasty problems on your computer. pls change the resolution to fixed or whatever it is supposed to be now. just out of curiosity, why doessnt mozilla recommend people to download the latest nightly, given its apparent stability advantage over the 1.0.6? ciao demi

the latest nightly builds have a lot of bugs fixed, but we don't know yet if they have new bugs, simply because they haven't been tested enough. When we release 1.5, we'll definitely recommend that people upgrade to that.
