see screenshot the icon serves no purpose because we allready have the [update now] button. In case a orange/red extension icon is used you won't even notice it. (for red/green colorblind persons this is with gerrn aswell)

As you point out, it's somewhat redundant, and might be hard to notice, but how does it hurt? Seems like a nice extra touch to me.

With the trunk checkin of bug 329045 the icon now does have a purpose. When an add-on is not selected the green update icon is displayed and the add-on description text is the add-on's description whereas before it was the has an update text. So, the icon now provides notification that there is additional information available and when the add-on is selected the has an update text is displayed below the add-on's description. resolved -> wontfix
