(Reporter: michael.aye, Assigned: mscott)

Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b4) Gecko/20050908 Firefox/1.4
Build Identifier: http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/releases/1.5beta1.html

the context menu "delete attachment" deletes the message in my IMAP account in
my Thunderbird 1.5beta1. It only can be seen that this happens after pressing
"Get Mail", which is when the email will be removed.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Receive e-mail with attachment
2 [review].Move mouse pointer over listed attachment
3 [review].Press RMB to choose "Delete".
4.Confirm deletion of attachment.

Actual Results:
Always things happen like this:
1. Thunderbird pops up the notification window for a new email in the IMAP
account, where i just deleted an attachment; but the 'new email-counter' has not
increased.
2. Status line says: Downloading message header 1 of 1
3. Attachment item does not change to 'Deleted' as in POP3 account.
4. I even still can open this attachment
5. But when i press 'Get Mail', the email will be deleted and gone from the Inbox.
6. No new items have arrived in the Sent box (like in similar previous bugs)

Expected Results:
Mark the deleted attachment as deleted and leave email fully functional (without
attachement of course) in Inbox. This works fine for me in my GMX POP3 account.

Worksforme on linux.
Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8b5) Gecko/20050929 Thunderbird/1.4
ID:2005092906
Behaviour stays exactly the same for me with 1.5 Beta 2.
can you try generating an imap protocol log by following these instructions,
substituting IMAP for protocol, and attaching (after removing any sensitive
info) or e-mailing me the resulting log? thx.

Reporter, to modify attachments a new copy of the message is made without the deleted attachments, and the old one is deleted (It is not possible to modify a message in place, as was discussed in detail in the original bug asking for ability to delete attachments).

IMAP is on the server, so this is dependent on server behaviour. On POP3 it is done locally, so Mozilla does the right thing.

Hence why David asks for a log of IMAP.

Otherwise no-one can help. Since you haven't done this in 4 months and no-one has reported it (apparently) we should probably close this shortly.

I can see the same behavior in duplicating the message. The old one with the attachment is still visible and not deleted. Its a lack in updating the thread pane? I'll create an IMAP log later today. Hopefully this will help us to close this bug.

Meanwhile I don't think that this bug is critical or has to use the dataloss keyword while its a feature and not a bug. We should remove it...

Ever confirmed: true
Trying again shows me that it is enough to change the folder and switch back again. Then the message list within the thread pane will be displayed correctly and the duplicated entry isn't visible anymore. David, do you still need an IMAP log?
Severity: critical → normal

Well I would assume the IMAP log IS still necessary, because it presumably works fine on many IMAP servers.

Obviously this would have been tested when it was being developed.
Sorry but that's a dupe of bug 286655.
