Details

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b5) Gecko/20050926 Firefox/1.4 Software update hangs with 100% processor usage when user lacks NTFS write permissions on the update folder. To reproduce: 1. Run Firefox once so that the 'Updates' and 'Updates/0' directories are created. Close Firefox. 2. Change the NTFS permissions on either of the above folders to disallow file creation and modification. 3. Restart Firefox. Navigate the menus to 'Help' -> 'Check for Updates...'. Firefox should display the Software Update UI. 4. Once an available update has been detected, click the 'Download and Install' button. Firefox will begin the update process, but will stop almost immediately with the status string 'Connecting to the update server'. In past builds the throbber and progress bar would simply spin forever, but with this build the UI actually freezes and the processor usage shoots sky high. No crash is ever observed, but Firefox must be forced to close. This is a spin-off bug from bug 309183, destined for a fix after FF1.5b2, I think.
nominating for the next release to keep this on the radar
