User-Agent:       Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8b4) Gecko/20050908 Firefox/1.4
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8b4) Gecko/20050908 Firefox/1.4

Sometimes, I can no longer set the focus to single-line text input elements
(e.g. in forms, location bar, search container): when I click, nothing happens;
the caret doesn't appear and I can't type text there. This problem seems to
disappear as soon as I click in a multi-line text area (which I can find on this
Bugzilla page).

Reproducible: Sometimes

I'd never had this problem before Firefox 1.5 beta1.
WFM, FF 1.5 nightly 20050928, Mac OS X 10.4.2
WFM as well using 10.4.2. Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US;

Reporter, were on on Tiger as well?
Yes, I am on Tiger.
Reporter, could you please test in the latest /trunk/ builds and see if this is
still an issue? There's been some related bugs like this that've been recently
fixed. Thanks. http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/
I was going to close this bug, but it has just occurred again when loading this
page!

This problem still occurs with Firefox 1.5, sometimes even in multi-line test areas. The solution is to iconify the window and reopen it (I sometimes need to do that several times).

I can reproduce it on http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en all the time after clicking on the calendar, then on either "Paste selected date" or "Close". I can't set the focus to the URL bar, to the search container or to the text input (From or To). Then, after switching tab to this bugzilla page, the problem still occurs; in this multi-line text area "Additional Comments", the caret is blinking and I can change its position with the mouse button, but I can't type text or move the caret with the keyboard. I have to iconify/deiconify the window.
The problem also occurs everytime when opening a URL from an external application while the Firefox window was iconized. Clicking in the address bar or the search container doesn't make the caret appear and typing text does nothing. If I try to select a part of the address bar or search container with the mouse, I can't see any selection (and if I open the contextual menu, Copy is greyed out); but if I iconify then deiconify the Firefox window, then I can see the selection I did before iconifying/deiconifying the window.

Note: the workaround consisting in iconifying/deiconifying the window doesn't always work. I'm raising this bug to major since this is really annoying and this bug occurs quite often...
Severity: normal → major
Also, things like page-up and page-down to scroll no longer work.
Summary: Can't set focus to single-line text input → Firefox doesn't respond to key events and clicks in text input (no focus)
It seems that this problem occurs more and more. I've just tried with Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060111 Firefox/1.5.0.1 and a profile I've just created, and the problem is always reproducible. Here are the steps:
1. Start Firefox.
2. Iconify the Firefox window.
3. In a terminal, type "open some_url" (the URL doesn't matter, in particular I've tested on my home page). This makes the Firefox window automatically deiconify with the opened web page.
4. Click in the search container. The problem: it can't get the focus.
I haven't been able to reproduce this bug for a few weeks (possible after the upgrade to Firefox 1.5.0.2, but I don't remember exactly). So, let's close it.
