User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; PPC Mac OS X Mach-O; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7 This is a very useful feature and it is already implemented. All that needs to be done is to enable the hidden setting. It might be nice to display the address drop down list with the entry "Go to %Keyword%" Camino seemed to be okay when this hidden setting is enabled but further testing might be necessary. Since we have a Google search bar, I'm recommending WONTFIX for this bug. Users can turn this on on their own.
Yeah, it's very easy to enable this via about:config. I can't see any reason to make it the default.
It's different than Google Search. If you have this enabled and type "Camino", then it will automatically send you to www.caminobrowser.com without going through the search results at all! That's why it's called "Search by Name". A lot of people are familiar with this feature either from Firefox or Google Toolbar.
Sorry, I meant "Browse by Name"
I still don't see this "feature" as beneficial and actually see it as confusing to users. This is going back to the days with IE when you search from the location bar (this just takes it a step further). Since we have a search bar and smart keywords, I just don't see thi as needed. Mike, Simon, any comments?
I think the main point I'd like to make is that it takes about 15 seconds to turn this on yourself. Again, I see no need for it to be default behavior.
How is this the same as the Google Search field on the sidebar?! Like I said before, this is more or less a replacement of ".com" ".net" autocompletion. Instead of trying all the combinations and end up in fraudulent sites, we can just send a "I'm Feeling Lucky" query to google to redirect the user to the right website. For example, the user can now type camino, instead of camino browser.org to get to the the right website. The user will also avoid fraudulent sites, such as mozillazine.com (not the .org website!) when they type in mozillazine. Also, although this setting only takes 15 seconds to enable, furthering testing might be necessary before we rule that the feature is stable enough for everyday use.
The feature also leads to unexpected behavior for users and its own share of wrong sites (I have it turned off in Fx for that very reason). If someone wants this behavior, it's very easy for the person to turn it on (and if there are stability problems, that's a serious Core issue), as Wevah has mentioned twice, but it brings little benefit (but a whole new category of unexpected behavior) for most users over the default behavior we currently have.
I am convinced now, so I guess this will be a WONTFIX.
