Carried over from bug 30444:

Currently, placing the cursor in the quoted part of a message replied to in HTML
compose and starting to type causes the quote to be split and the text to appear
outside the blockquote.

I'm against splitting the blockquote unless you hit  Return.  In any case, it
should be consistent with plain text compose (where you can type in the quoted
part without splitting the <pre>).

FWIW: I agree that we should not split when we type characters.  I regularly go
in and edit down what I'm replying to, and sometimes a make a mistake, and
delete too many characters.  Alas, as it currently stands, I can't put
characters back in (oops).
In addition, it is common for me to want to delete a long section and replace it
with text like:
...[long detailed explanation]...
and again, I can't do this :-(
Jfrancis seemed to think this would be a very easy change... and IMO, it would
be very helpful for (my) usability.
