RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 297534

Details

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7

In Thunderbird options, in the advanced tab, there is a option called "wait xx seconds before marking a message as read" with a check box next to it. If you unchecked the check box, to disable it???, and then go to your in-box and select a message, the message is marked as read instantly, the correct action would be to NOT mark at all.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Uncheck the check box next to indicated option
2. choose unread message in any folder, and message will be marked as read instantly

Actual Results:
The message should not have been marked read, because the option was disabled in the option dialog's advanced tab.

Expected Results:
The message should have remained in the unread state, because the option to make messages as read after a specified about of time was unchecked / disabled.

I first noticed this in the 1.0.6 version, however I updated to 1.0.7 today and the bug is still there, also I downloaded and installed the 1.5 beta 2 version and the bug also exists in that version.
I disagree. If I disable "wait", I would expect it not to wait- but mark it as read instantly.
Related to bug 234121?
In responce to #1, logic would dictate that unchecking an option "mark as read", would cause the program to NOT do any marking of any kind. Perhaps logic was not the intent of the UI design?
Anyway, it seems in the next Thunderbird version (1.5) you will be able to enter 0 seconds there and then your messages will never be marked read.
(In reply to comment #4)
If you check a box that says "Wait 0 seconds before making a message as read" I would think it would do what it says and mark it instantly. Why not avoid this question asked over and over and simply just uncheck the box and the message will not be marked as read and if you check it…. “Wait X# seconds…..”
I have thunderbird 1.5 now, and with 0 seconds it does not work.

Version: version 1.5 (20051025)

if 0 seconds it is marked instantly, of corse with the wording change in the UI this now makes since, however I think it would still be nice to have a "simple" way to NOT mark a message as read instead of the "work around" of adding huge number of seconds in the wait UI option. It would seem to me that the huge number of seconds would also induce more overhead, however I have no evidence to back that "theory" up.
Why not use the same options as in Outlook 2003 where it is not necessary to kludge around with value = 0 :

Reading Pane options:
- [ ] Mark items as read when viewed in reading pane
  - Wait [ ] seconds before making items as read

Those are well phrased and leave no place for misunderstanding. It doesn't matter how things are handled internally as long as the GUI looks like that to the user.

Mig
unchecking "wait x seconds before marking a message as read" make it not to wait at all, if i put it on 3600 seconds it workes ok, (but if i put in a bigger number in 1.5 it count it as zero. this was not the case in 1.0.7, so in 1.0.7 i used 5000000 sec)
This bug is an illogical (operator is "wait" not "mark as read") duplicate of the incorrectly phrased bug 297534 (reports UI text incorrectly without "wait"). That bug's reporter presents the same request as this bug's reporter but much clearer and with good UI layout suggestion.
Agree with comment 9, duping.
