Something is happening when Thunderbird is updated. After one successful update, all future attempts to update result in the "cannot verify integrity" error. Deleting the update*.xml files and directory fixes it. Then repeat the process for each round of updating.

I think the problem is related to bug 312135. When you manually terminate the thunderbird.exe process, it does not delete the files in the update directory. If the update.mar file is not deleted, all subsequent attempts to update fail.
