display the message count of the folder behind the folder name! See my example:

Inbox(123)
+Private(4132)
 +Friends(123)
+Work(12453)

Reproducible: Always
In Thunderbird:
  Options | Advanced
[x] Show expanded columns in the folder pane

Set the above option. At the top of the folder tree, there is now a column header, "Name", and next to it is a column selector button. Click that button, a little menu drops down. Select "Total" from that menu.

Now there is a new column, with the total number of messages in the folder. The parenthesized value will still be shown, giving the number of unread messages.
