(Whiteboard: [closeme 2010-04-21])
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7
Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.12) Gecko/20050915 Firefox/1.0.7
Mozilla overrides options, and opens links in new window instead of tabs. Also, pop-up control is nonexistent. Upgrading to Firefox 1.5 doesn't solve problem.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Click a link that leads outside of main website.
Actual Results:
Link opens in a new window.
Expected Results:
Link opens in a new tab.
An extension or a theme is not the orgin of this bug.

Does setting browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction to 0 in about:config "fix" this problem?

I have no idea what setting you're talking about.

Type about:config in the location bar, hit enter, search for that entry. Double click it and enter 0 in. Try to open a new link and see if the behavior is as expected.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051107 Firefox/1.5 ID:2005110723
WFM.
Does that also happen in the safe mode or with a new profile?

Are you quite sure that browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs is set to true?

Yes, it does happen, and browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs is indeed set to True.

Jon, yes, right click on it and click reset. Could you please provide a URL that demonstrates this bug?

It happens with any outside link. It may be an isolated bug.

I've narrowed it down to two about:config options browser.link.open_external(value:3) and/or browser.preferences.lastpanel(value:4). Since, I don't know how to set the values, I was wondering if I could get some help?

This bug occurs in many cases, and it was introduced by the Firexof 1.5.
Here is another example:
Go to panasonic product support:
http://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/vProdSupportContact?storeId=15001#email
and click on "Email us by using our convenient online form."
I have many more such examples: My bank billing system, Fidelity investments, etc. etc. etc.
I really hope for a fix. Firefox 1.0.n was a blessing with its Tab-policy!!
Thanks in advance.

Seemingly this issue is still among us as of Aug. 2007, V 2.0.0.6. Despite preference set to "Open new window in a tab" and despite active popup blocker, many sites manage to elude the checks and open regularly "pup-unders".
Check with http://www.faz.net, what is a premiere German newspaper. Click on on one or two articles and go back, one or more pop-unders will appear.

I'm finding that ANY exterior link will open a new window instead of a new tab in the existing window. I have always set exterior links to open in a new tab, but that stopped happening when the upgrade to version 2.0.0.9 installed.

Since loading Firefox 3.5, multiple windows open instead of multiple tabs. Whenever I click on a link inside an existing page, a new window opens. It's frustrating, because plain old FF3 behaves nicely.

This bug was reported on Firefox 2.x or older, which is no longer supported and will not be receiving any more updates. I strongly suggest that you update to Firefox 3.6.3 or later, update your plugins (flash, adobe, etc.), and retest in a new profile. If you still see the issue with the updated Firefox, please post here. Otherwise, please close as RESOLVED > WORKSFORME

Shawn, can you please test it again after you have created another profile in Firefox? http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing+profiles
I wonder if this is caused by strange pref settings.

No reply, INCOMPLETE. Please retest with Firefox 3.6.x or later and a new profile (http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles). If you continue to see this issue with the newest firefox and a new profile, then please comment on this bug.
