Details
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051025 Firefox/1.5 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051025 Firefox/1.5 I was typing in a separate program when Thunderbird spawned an update dialogue box and forced focus away from my application. Worse still, my typing somehow confirmed the dialogue and thunderbird started installing the update before I even got a chance to see exactly what happened. This, obviously, should change. I was not using Thunderbird at the time, so popping up a dialogue -- especially one that steals focus -- isn't acceptable. I couldn't even identify the dialogue before it was confirmed by my keystrokes. Reproducible: Always

Hi, it gets even worse, the focus is also stolen when actually writing an email in TB. I was happily typing away when suddenly that window popped up, interrupting me from writing my current email message. With this and bug 307042, there are now at least two places where TB can interrupt you while writing an email message, causing you to actually lose words. In many aspects, you are WAY better than other clients, but no other email client I know (not even outlook) steals the focus while you are writing an email message. This will drive people NUTS. Please, please, please consider taking these bugs seriously and fix them in a point release. Thanks

Maybe this bug is already fixed, but I don't know how to verify this. Firefox just popped up a tiny, non-obtrusive message above the system tray to notify me about the new version. It doesn't seem to me that I will be getting another obtrusive message for the same update, but again, I have no way of testing this. If Firefox has it right, then, according to comment #2, Thunderbird should also have it right. If someone with more inside knowledge could verify that this bug is gone, it'll be one bug less on the list...

Philip, Mark, did you still see this problem in version 2? Thomas D. - version 2?

actually already using the current alpha 3 of TB3 - even since alpha 1. As I updated manually all the time, I cannot confirm this to be fixed, but considering that FF stopped annyoing back in the 2.0 days too and considering that TB uses the same framework, I would guess this is fixed now. I am going to try to install an outdated nightly and test it with that. However, don't expect to see the outcome of my testing before Sunday evening (CET) as I'm not currently in front of a machine where I could try this out.

This has been fixed in the Toolkit code by bug 323041 during the beta cycle of Firefox 3. Means Thunderbird 3 doesn't show this issue anymore.
