I submit that display of messages by thread is a setting which should be separate from the sort criteria and also have a separate toggle UI element. That is, you have your (single or multiple) sort criteria, which are independent of whether what you're sorting is single messages or threads of messages. This also means that implementing this is independent of whether or not multiple source criteria are implemeneted.

This bug is related to bug 288476 and bug 57898, but it is not a dupe thereof IMHO.
I agree wholeheartedly!  I often change which date direction I have sorted by in order to facilitate browsing, and as soon as I do so using the row headers, my threads disappear!  I would love to be able to set the threaded/unthreaded preference somewhere and have it STAY that way regardless of the sort.  Mail.app and others seem able to do this, but lack in so many other ways.  I would love to use Thunderbird permanently, but this really niggles at me.

This is WFM. We made mailnews.thread_pane_column_unthreads false years ago, before that this would have been an issue.
