have moved user directory to a seperate partition and is fully linked. the relocation may be a part of the cause of the problem, but shouldnt be and all other programs function normally.

Firefox hangs when the initial window (the only one on display) is closed, whether or not it is responding to requests, or if any other non responding window/tab is closed. the program even fails to respond to either a dock menu quit request, an apple-key Q request or an application menu quit request, the only way to quit the program is through a forced quit.

potentially related is the fact that some hyperlinks/javascript redirects do nothing, despite being properly coded i.e. <a href="http://.../...">do something</a> infact does nothing, no window, no redirect, nothing. the only thing it does is change the link from "linked" status to "visited" status.

the error also makes entries in the menu bar "window" menu, which have no associated window atached nor do they have a title, just a blank row item added to the menu. also fails to open "new" windows/tabs on request by menu or shortcut, but adds another row item to the menu. fails to open local files in the same manor.

images of the application during "crash" are available if required.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. have user directory located in an unexpected (not default) location
2. launch firefox
3. navigate to a website known to cause window to not respond
-OR-
3. close window
4. try to quit application
Actual Results:
nothing, firefox hangs/crashes. requires forced quit.

Expected Results:
the program should have quit, phantom windows should not be listed in menu bar "window" menu.

no error messages given!

application becomes unusable very quickly (and i really liked the browser up until this point! camino and safari seem quite happy, just seems to be firefox that is affected)

and just in case it is useful:

If you could attach the Mac crash log that'd be great.
This appears to only feature 2 crashes, but have experienced unclean exits and application hangs, which arent shown, have trawled all the logs and cant find anything. I assume the program didnt have opportunity to write to a log and the system didnt perceive it as an issue and simply killed the program when asket to 'force quit' the app, sometimes the forced quit took several attempts!

Some good news, all of a sudden yesterday firefox started woorking 'correctly' and have so far not had the same problem... i still think there is an issue with the app, but i think it is probably one of those bugs that are random and infrequent unless your system hits the problem head on every time, like mine did.
to potentially aid your work i have enclosed some system information too (cant find anything like hinv on mac os x so have included information from the Apple System Profiler (edited).

Darren, are you still seeing this issue in Firefox 3.5? If not, please mark this bug as WORKSFORME. If you are, I'd like to know more about your setup, preferably in the form of steps to reproduce starting with "buy a new Mac".

fwiw, FindOrSynthesizeTable no longer exists.
The problem was with 1 and 1.5, since these are not current and Firefox 2 and 3 are current development. Since no further work will be done on the Firefox 1 branch, this bug probably ought to be marked "no longer relevant to current branch development", though the bug is technically not fixed.

The buy a new mac is NOT an appropriate response to the issue. Only Mac OS X prior to 10.2.8 is no longer actively supported, though software support is still available depending on OS feature requirements.

Some of us have large numbers of machines which would be considered "old, but working". These machines are still productive, somethings do not require superfluous upgrading.
When I said "steps to reproduce starting with 'buy a new Mac'", I didn't mean to imply you should buy a new Mac. I meant I wanted steps to reproduce starting from a fresh computer that explained how to create a similar setup (with my home directory in a similarly "unusual situation").

However, given that this only affects Firefox 1.5, I'm marking it as wontfix.
