Did you set xpinstall.enabled to 'false' long ago (due to a security issue, since resolved) and forget to set it back? I did. Go to the url about:config to check/fix.
Put more clearly:
Did you disable automatic extension installation (i.e. set xpinstall.enabled to 'false') long ago (due to a security issue, since resolved) and forget to set it back? I did.
As briefly mentioned at bug 310737, the fix/ workaround is to go to the URL about:config to check/fix. (Tip: Then use "Filter" to search for xpinstall.enabled.)
Marking as dupe.
