Maybe you could try a new start of everything?
Within a few days the new 1.5 will come out. You could also try the current 1.5RC3. Before installing try making a new profile (close Firefox, click on your Windows Start button and type %appdata% in your Run box. Rename the folder Mozilla.

You could also create a new profile by starting Firefox with the -p extension:
firefox.exe -p

Actually, it worked on my laptop which worked anyway, but it didn't work on my new desktop. I downloaded the beta 1.5RC3 version and that didn't work either. Any more suggestions? Appreciate the help. Peter

Nothing worked, even the new beta version. Do you have some other suggestions. This is very frustrating. Peter

Did you try the approach in comment 1? That + an uninstall of firefox, make sure the "mozilla firefox" folder is gone in program files folder
then reinstall
