This is a wierd and difficult to describe bug but hopefully the pictures will help explain. Basically the cursor position lags behind the text when inputting in text fields like this one, and the text beyond the cursor doesn't get displayed. There are other problems, like text getting cut off by the edge of the form field and the highlight when i select text being a different size than the text itself. It's all very perplexing.
I'm curently running 10.3.9 but this bug has been happening to me for a while. Camino is the only app that it seems to affect.
Reproducible: Always
OK so I just downloaded firefox 1.5 and the bug affects it, also. Sorry to have wasted your time.
My first thought was the Windows fonts bug 288047, but that's 10.4-only. I've seen something in the forums about font-management software causing this, too; Samuel, is there a bug on that? theseum@rampantlabs.net, are you running non-Apple font mgmt software?

No, just running FontBook although I'm using a bunch of old Adobe fonts from fontfolio that might be causing the problem? In any case it isn't camino-specific.
Did you file a Core or Firefox bug on this (it is mozilla apps-specific, right?)

Theseum, can you confirm that you're using a dual monitor setup in extended mode (ie not mirrored) when you get this problem?
I think that this bug is pecific to that configuration (any version of OS X hardware and software).

I am having the same problem in Thunderbird 2.0.0.14 on Mac OSX 10.5.2 PPC G4 and intel, both the same.
This happens when using the function 'edit as new' for an text format email from the sent folder.
The selection is off, the cursor is off, exactly like the screenshots attached by the bug reporter.
This only happens when editing sent plain text email, not in html format emails.
I have been having this problem since Thunderbird 2.0.0.0 on Mac OSX 10.3.9 PPC (i did not have intel to try that time)
This also happens sometimes in Firefox 2.0.0.14 on Mac OSX 10.5.2 Intel, (hard to reproduce), when using hotmail to edit some emails.
This is not specific to dual monitor setup since i am not using dual monitor in my PPC powerbook G4, but using dual monitor on my macbookpro intel, both will have this problem.
I can always reproduce using Thunderbird 2 on Mac
1. send a long _plain text_ email to yourself
1a. the email is now saved in "sent" folder
2. right click the email just sent from the sent folder, and select "Edit as new"
2a. message is opened in new window.
3. highlight all the text and see that the selection is off.
4. change the cursor to the end of 1 line and type something. the cursor is off from the position.

I found the cause of the problem:
This is caused maybe by copying the profile from a windows machine.
I have tried this using thunderbird 2.0.0.14 and firefox 2.0.0.14.
To reproduce using a new profile:
when font.name.monospace.x-western is set to a non existant font, this exact problem is there when editing a plain monospaced text. (like in this bugzilla page)
to make the problem obvious, also change the font.minimum-size.x-western to be 16 or higher.
(change it from about:config page to set it to non existant font)
Workaround:
change it to 'Courier' or any valid font in the system and it works just fine (both thunderbird and firefox.
I could not reproduce this using firefox 3 RC1 and thunderbird 3.0a2pre
Seems like the bug is fixed in core version 1.9
Can someone also confirm the same? thanks.

Does this bug still occur?

Problem believed to be caused by invalid profile.
