Updating sortware, in the update window, a mysterious "2" has appeared between the "Go back" and "Done" buttons. Indeed, it starts as a "1", and as the window renders it changes into a "2".

Ok. Are you using the default theme? If not, have you tried switching back to it?

Good idea, and that fixes it. Apologies for having wasted your time on a wild goose chase. A comment has been added to the forum of theme Simpler at https://addons.mozilla.org/themes/moreinfo.php?id=784&application=firefox
