found while using the following opt beta branch bits: linux [2000.03.15.06-nb1b, mozilla] mac [2000.03.15.05-nb1b, mozilla] winNT [2000.03.15.06-nb1b, commercial] 1. open Prefs dialog, go to Advanced > Mouse Wheel. 2. select "When using just the mouse wheel" from the droplist. 3. select the first radio button, "Scroll the the document by # lines." observe that the textfield for # of lines is inaccessable. why? it doesn't make sense. if any of the other three items in the droplist is selected, this textfield is active/editable. right now the user is forced to scroll only 1 line at a time when "just using the mouse wheel" is selected.
The "Use system default" checkbox underneath the # of lines textfield has a confusing, nonobvious interaction with the textfield. When the checkbox is checked, the textbox is disabled. This is poor UI design. The "Use system default" choice should not be a checkbox, it should be radiobutton in the same group as the other radiobuttons in the dialog.
Summary: Mouse Wheel: scroll by # of lines textfield should be active for all four configurations → Mouse Wheel: scroll by # of lines textfield confusing
Reassigning as per Don, who asks "what should we do about this?"
Assignee: matt → german
Checking today's build, the checkbox was off but the number field was still disabled. Also I am missing a noun after the entry field (lines?) I agree with the reporters assesment that the Ui is not optimal: we should use two radio buttons: (X) use system settings (O) use custom settings : scroll the document by [ ] lines. Assigning to Ben.

System default applies only to the number of lines to scroll, IIRC. This is not poor UI design. There may be bugs with the enabling/disabling of the two elements, if so, then they should be specifically noted ;)
