User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5 I am using Firefox 1.5, KDE 3.5. This should be easily reproducible. My wallpaper is set to change once every 30 minutes. Every time it does, every tab is reset to the top of the page; i.e. if I am halfway down a slashdot discussion, it will bump me to the top of the page (after a 3 second glitch.) I have filed a corresponding bug with KDE. http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=118203 Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Set your wallpaper to change once every 30 mins 2. Open firefox, browse, scroll down 3. Wait
I am also experiencing this with Firefox, but more severe. When it happens, Firefox will jump to 100% CPU usage, and will freeze for some time (occasionally a couple seconds as described by the original reporter, sometimes for 30 seconds to several minutes, occasionally a really long time and I have to kill firefox). It appears to only happen to firefox >= 1.5 - I did not have the problem with 1.0.7, and downgrading to 1.0.7 seems to stop the problem. Also, it happens with my work computer, which is Pentium 4 with hyperthreading enabled (SMP kernel) but not on my Athlon 64 system at home. At first I thought it was completely random, but then I realized it was coinciding with background changes. I can reproduce the problem by just changing the slideshow settings in kcontrol while firefox is loaded. When the background redraws as a result, ker-blammo, firefox freezes. I've crossposted this comment to the KDE bug.
Please pay this bug some attention. It is horrendously annoying, especially when using XGL (since it makes the whole firefox window dark gray.) For the record, my desktop slideshow is using scale & crop / elliptic gradient / intensity blending. However, the rerendering is instant; firefox is unresponsive for a good 5 seconds afterwards, and loses scroll position in long pages. Please get in touch with the KDE folks and work out where the problem is.
I am having this same exact problem. My Kubuntu desktop wallpaper changes every 45 minutes and each time it does, the Firefox window turns dark gray and is completely unusable. If I'm lucky enough to get it to come back after it uses 99% of my CPU, I am at the top of the page in the current tab. I can easily reproduce this bug, over and over. I did not have this problem with Ubuntu Dapper 6.06 w/ kdesktop. This issue only began after reinstalling and using a Kubuntu 6.06 distribution.
Reporter, do you still see this problem with the latest Firefox 2? If not, can you please close this bug as WORKSFORME. Thanks!

I had forgotten about thus bug - my particular variation of this problem no longer occurs with Firefox 2.
