One friend of me uses the global folder structur to get all e-mail accounts in his subfolders... He recognized that only the unread messgaes in the global INBOX where counted and published (for instance in the windows login mask). He asked if there is an extension but I think this must be a bug... or?

I tested it with my Thunderbird and found a "bug-extension":
I use folder structures for each e-mail address (POs and IMAPs) and the "unread message" count look only in the INBOX folder of my first account...

Reproducible: Always
I can confirm this bug on Tbird 1.5 (20051201)/Win XP.

We use an MS Exchange server at work for email and calendaring. I use IMAP to connect, and have filters implemented as follows for the IMAP inbox:
1) If the incoming email is a calendaring message, it gets moved to a different IMAP folder and stays on the server (so I can access the message from Outlook).
2) If the incoming email is from one of several mailing lists, it gets transferred to an appropriate *local* folder.
3) Otherwise, it gets copied to my *local* Inbox.

[Comment - this means that the IMAP inbox is *always* emptied when new mail arrives. I run this way because of dissatisfaction with how our Exchange server is configured. I have zero chance of getting our IT to change how it is configured, though.]

Whenever I get new mail (with no calendaring messages), the popup alert and tray icon reports "[account name] has 0 new messages."

When I bring up the Thunderbird window, the mail is properly sorted, with correct unread mail counts in each folder. I also get a "bling" biff icon in the folders subwindow, indicating new messages on both the IMAP account root level icon, as well as the appropriate local folders.

When reading the local folders, the tray icon stays, even after all local folders are read (the local folder biffs disappear appropriately).

When I click on the *empty* IMAP inbox, only then do the "bling" biff and tray icon disappear.

Expected behavior would be:
(1) total up all the unread messages in all the folders (local and IMAP) and report that in the tray icon, and
(2) *not* require a click on the empty IMAP inbox to clear the IMAP biff/tray icon.
