User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5 Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5 The URL above shows documentation -- TOC on left -- topic on right. The mouse wheel always scrolls the TOC even when positioned above the topic. IE correctly scrolls the frame under which the cursor is positioned. I believe Firefox used to work like this as well. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Go to the above URL 2. Position cursor in right frame and use mouse wheel to scroll. 3. Actual Results: The left frame (TOC) scrolls every time. Expected Results: The frame under which the cursor is positioned scrolls.
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20051230 Firefox/1.6a1 ID:2005123005 In Firefox you first need to click in the frame that you want to scroll. I see this also in 1.0.7.
Clicking in the frame makes no difference. Did you try the URL I posted? So long as the left (TOC) frame is scrollable, it is the frame that is scrolled.
(hey ed, it's Wayne from VSE-land) Tested IE, FF1.0.4, FF1.5, SM 1.5 (trunk) I do not see behavior where it scrolls wrong frame - left side does not scroll when right side focused. In all cases left side always scrolls after left side is focused via clicking left scroll bar. In all cases except FF 1.5 (and Moz1.8b), after initial page load (no click anywhere) mouse over left side and left side will scroll and right side always scrolls when moused over (or focused). A *key* difference in FF1.5 is if TOC item is clicked then left side does not scroll - focus has been given to the right side. *FF Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.7.8) Gecko/20050511 Firefox/1.0.4 $SM Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9a1) Gecko/20051227 SeaMonkey/1.5a #Moz1.8b2 Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8b2) Gecko/20050604
After reading your comments, I did some experimentation and found this problem did not occur on my laptop (an IBM Thinkpad). Yet, occurred continuously on my desktop machine. I was given a new HP Wireless Rechargeable Optical Mouse for Christmas. After I unloaded it's "special features" software, Firefox began to operate again as expected. Apparently, there is some sort of an incompatibility between that HP mouse software and Firefox. The incompatibility does not exist with Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Summary: Mouse wheel scrolls the wrong frame → Mouse wheel scrolls the wrong frame with HP Wireless Rechargeable Optical Mouse
Component: General → General

Do you still see this problem using Firefox 3.5? Please update the bug, and close/alter bug if appropriate.
