I would like to have Firefox download files through multiple threads, for faster downloading of files.
Opera web browser has this feature, and would like to have the same feature built into Firefox, so I don't have to migrate to other web browsers.
It would be nice if firefox could allow users to customize the number of threads it makes to a server to download a file.

Bug 40106 mentions this, but only for multiple sites. Not for the same file on the same site, or for multiple files on the same site. Download accelerators are evil(tm).

Bug 269779 wad duped to bug 40106, this one too ?

Reads as the same to me.

Do you mean opening several network connections to the web server?

Whilst this might be extension material (providing a download manager
with more features - see Venkman for an extension that works this way),
could I vote against it? It is
potentially unfriendly (bad netizen behaviour) to services and peers,
and therefore not part of a general purpose browser.

If you are doing sufficent downloading for this to be a problem, then
you probably need a download manager - a special purpose browser - that
will do this and more.

If you really need faster downloads, then perhaps the http protocol is the
wrong one for you, and you should be obtaining your files through bit-torrent;
but I have no real way of knowing whether this is the case for you.

Of course there is nothing to stop you or anyone using Mozilla as a RAD
to develop an instance of either of the two types of Application that I
refer to, or for that nmatter forking the entire codebase - see
Firefox, Thunderbird, Sunbird and Nvu for examples!

See Bug 40106 "Accelerated Download for files with mirrors (swarming)" and
Bug 40106 Comment 14 especially the discussion on that comment

Resumed downloads (Bug 18004 "general issues w/ resumable downloads
(ftp+http) - ability to manually/automatically restart/resume
cancelled/failed/disconnected downloads) and automatic use of fastest mirrors
would seem to provide more benefit for similar input of effort.
