This was originally going to be a Feature Request, but I'm not quite sure whether it's actually a Bug, or not.

I was originally going to say that when browsing newsgroups, Outlook Express shows ""~x~ message(s), ~y~ unread, ~z~ not downloaded" in the statusbar, yet Thunderbird's doesn't show the Total # of message headers 'not downloaded' in the statusbar (so I was going to request it).

However, I then noticed that TB's statusbar shows 'Unread' and 'Total' counts (bottom-right corner), but -- the 'Total' count seems to be only relevant to the # of messages currently downloaded, not the # of messages on the server.

HOWEVER.. I discovered that the above statement is not necessarily true all the time.. possibly due to a Bug (which I did not see already filed).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Subscribe to a new newsgroup that is likely to have 1000+ messages on it (ex: alt.test)
2. Download the default 500 message headers, but do NOT check the 'mark remaining headers as read' box.
3. Watch the bracketed 'Total' by ng folder in the folder pane as the headers download (27,855 on my server)-- AND then watch as it changes to '500' once the headers are done downloading.
4. Confirm that the 'Total' in the statusbar shows '500'.
5. Go to File->Get Next 500 news messages'
6. Notice that the 'Total' count in the folder pane AND the statusbar now changes to 1000 (500 originally downloaded + 500 now)
7. Hit the 'Get Mail' toolbar button (or File->Get New Messages)
8. Observe that the 'true' Totals are now shown: the statusbar (in my case) shows: 'Unread: 27855', 'Total: 27855'.
9. Click on any message in the message list pane.
10. Note that as soon as the messages turns to 'Read', the statusbar (and folder pane) 'Totals' change to reflect the 'downloaded header' totals, not the totals for the newsserver. (ie: 'Unread: 999', 'Total: 1000')



So either this is a true Bug, or the statusbar needs to *always* show a 'not downloaded' total (as well as the # of msgs downloaded 'total'), as OE does.
I actually like the way OE presents it all in one statement.

A dupe of one of the bugs in bug 71728. Most likely 41457. Please fix if I am wrong.
