322874 - ntlm auth via proxy should cause immediate error

I just got burnt. I had manually set my proxy settings so that all Web traffic went out via proxy, then went to a NTLM-protected Web site. It kept failing.

I couldn't figure out what was wrong - until I remembered my proxy settings...

Obviously NTLM auth doesn't work via proxy, so shouldn't Firefox/Mozilla just flick up an error page and be done with it? Instead of trying-and-failing?

Also, the intranet site I am refering to supported both NTLM and Basic - and FF stuck to doing NTLM. It could also be an option for it to have attempted Basic - although from a security perspective - an error page would be better...

I'm not so sure about this.
Could you try going to a different NTLM-protected website in the latest version of Firefox?

You're dead right. When I manually set my proxy settings and went to an NTLM-only site, I immediately got the HTML error page from that site.

I also tried a site which supported both NTLM and Basic, going direct made FF use NTLM, and going via a proxy made it use Basic. Sounds good to me :-)

I'm trying to remember back to why I submitted this bug report - certainly seemed real at the time. Close this as INVALID I guess... Sorry about that :-}
