If I have the outgoing scan by antivirus enabled, in the Bit Defender Pro 9 AV program, I can't send the email or reply, I get a message (not verbatim) to the effect that connecting to the smtp server either was refused or failed - check the settings. To isolate the problem, I first turned off the firewall, then I turned off AV completely, and sending was OK. I re enabled the AV first, but unticked the box beside "scan outgoing mail" and it worked, so I re enabled the firewall and it still worked. I have used thunderbird for email exclusively since its inception but just installed the latest (1.5) today and this was the first attempt to send mail with it.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.enable "scan outgoing mail" in antivirus app
2.
3.
Actual Results:
see above in "details" section
Expected Results:
outlined above in "details" section
should have allowed scanning of outgoing mail - I believe the problem could be if you're sending to say 15 recipients, with an attachment (this one was about 4 mb) a time out occurs in thunderbird's attempt to send the mail

Well, i think this bug is invalid since the virus scanner is to blame...anyway can you create a SMTP log which shows this bug as described under http://www.mozilla.org/quality/mailnews/mail-troubleshoot.html#smtp (just replace mozilla with thunderbird) and attach it here?

I received email to the effect that the virus scanner was to blame .... but now Thunderbird is working again with the AV working scanning both incoming and outgoing email ...I am still puzzled as to why I had to wipe and reinstall whole system to solve the problem but whatever caused it, I can't reproduce at the present time. For several days before the wipe and reinstall (same AV program reinstalled too) I experienced many SMTP problems but now all is running normally again
