Build Identifier: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8) Gecko/20051111 Firefox/1.5
After closing Thunderbird it restarts immediately. This is true even if I kill it using the task manager. It does not depend on whether I have a network connection. I am using a Thinkpad X41.
Reproducible: Always
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start Thurderbird
2.Kill Thunderbird
3.See it restart

We're talking about Thunderbird 1.5 here? Do you have any extensions installed? Does this also happen when you create a second test profile (do that with thunderbird.exe -profileManager)?

Yes this is Thunderbird 1.5.
No extensions installed.
Yes it also happens if I create a second test profile as you describe. As you can imagine it was a little difficult to do the test you describe because every time you close the application in order to start it up differently, it tries to restart -> you have to be very quick.
Anyway I think it is probably specific to the Thinkpad series of notebooks as it also happened on my T41.

I meant it also happened on a Thinkpad T43 I used to own

Just reinstalled WinXP & then added Thunderbird Setup 1.5.0.4.exe
Save things happens, if anything it is worst as the restart happens more quickly.
I am downloading email for 2 accounts from google pop server

This "problem" is todo with how thunderbird handles inquiries for email status (I guess it can't?). On thinkpads there is a nice active desktop which I always use. It has a nice theme and also provides a calendar, disk usage and email notification. Unfortunately it is the email notification that starts up Thunderbird.
Disable the thinkpad active desktop which provides the email notification service and thunderbird works fine.
