I too was amazed why FF grabs so much memory, is there a plans for working out this obvious problem ?
Curently I have 9 tabs opened xrestop shows 15MB pixmaps and top 78MB. At work i noramally open at least 2 browsers with minimum 10 tabs on 512MB computer, which is a real waste !
To worser things even more when I close tabs, memory is not reclaimed for the system and i have to restart FF at least once week :( to free my memory for other apps.

I agree that this can slow FF abit 'cause it will have to take care of additional work, but what if it is made a Configuration option so that low-memory users can have a choice.

Many opinions on the internet i read point memory consumption as MAIN complain for FF and probably the main problem that can slowdown adoption of FF from power users and from there to the general public.

Reproducible: Always
