Search results in my toolbar also overflowed the box. Please refer to my last bug. Also, you should be able to add your own engines. If you can already, make it easier to figure out.

Problem WORKSFORME in 2000032011. Adding your own engines is almost certainly on the list of things to be done, although it may require some programming and so not be a user operation; I am however, converting this bug to an enhancement and changing Component to Sidebar. Gerv
Severity: minor → enhancement
Component: Browser-General → Sidebar
OS: other → All
Hardware: Other → All
Summary: Search results → RFE: Add own search engines to sidebar

Call me naive, but why would it require programming? All you have to do is have a dialog box come up that asks the user the domain, such as search.excite.com, and the phrase. Is it parsing the phrase that requires the programming? If so, JScript would probably work fine. Then search sites could give you the JS code to add to mozilla, or advanced users could write it themselves and post it on the internet.

The files relating to this are chrome/search/content/default/search-panel.*. Adding new engines means telling Mozilla how to interface with them. This requires some sort of programming, and is not a user-option. You could have a button on websites marked "Add this engine to Mozilla" but, for security reasons, the Moz team takes a dim view of random websites being permitted to alter the browser :-) At least, that's AIUI.
