A sidebar that could hold anything we wanted: downloads, page source, bookmarks, details about current pages, etc.

I'm pretty sure anything related to a "sidebar" is, by default, a no. :)

Why is that? What about a drawer since that is more OS X style?

We had a drawer and removed it (see Chimera 0.7).

The sidebar as a bookmark system has been wontfixed, but this is a substantially different request that should be considered on its own merits.

Although having looked at the all-in-one extension now, I realize I misunderstood the request; I thought it was more of a drop-zone for holding references to bookmarks, downloads, etc., rather than a place to hold arbitrary views.

We've WONTFIXed this before as bug 310885, bug 188223, bug 146330 (my favorite), and probably others I've missed--some of them even when the drawer still existed.

The UI of the Firefox extension is an utter nightmare, and most of the offerings ("arbitrary views") are items that Camino doesn't support or only supports in a dedicated window/manager for usability purposes.  

This RFE would require a lot of work for something that few people would use and which would be a UI nightmare we're not going to foist upon Camino users.  Also, there's no reason to duplicate functionality that's already provided in better, more useable forms, and there's a significat cost to doing so.
