My concern: The branch Lightning does not work in trunk Thunderbird (iirc). So how do we prevent installation into trunk Thunderbird (version 1.6a1)? Or is the trunk version number bumped to greater than 2.x in the meantime?

The trunk version has been bumped to 3.0a1. See bug 327164

My concern is that the new version cannot be installed any more on the stable branch, which used to work with Lightening 0.1 RC2. Please undo this patch.

Please read the bug carefully before posting. The intent of this bug is to make Lightning installable in Thunderbird 2.0 alpha 1 too. This will be done by bumping the maxVersion of Thunderbird that is supported by Lightning.
The intend is *not* making Lightning *not* installable in Thunderbird 1.5.
