Description

User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.8.0.1) Gecko/20060111 Firefox/1.5.0.1
Build Identifier: Firefox/1.5.0.1

I installed Firefox on my office computer and when it asked if I wanted to copy Netscape bookmarks, passwords, etc., I said "yes" and it copied successfully.

On my home computer it never asked the question and I found the bookmarks were from a previous version of Firefox I had uninstalled about two years ago. Apparently the uninstall process did not remove them and were recognized by the new install.

A solution would be to change the install process to unconditionaly ask if old bookmarks from IE, Netscape should be copied or use the option of retaining current Firefox bookmarks.

Gary Mokotoff

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Firefox. Copy Netscape bookmakrs, etc.
2. Unstall Firefox.
3. Reinstall Firfox. Question is not asked to install Netscape bookmarks.

Actual Results:
As described above

Expected Results:
I shoul dbe able to reinstall Netscape bookmakrs when I reinstall Firefox.

You got it all!!!!!!!

Bookmarks are not stored inside the application direcory, but in the profile. Uninstalling the application doesn't remove them.

When installing Firefox, it looks for the application directory of an previous Firefox, and used that without asking if you agreed (I though that bug 240136 would have prevented that ?). That's why the old Firefox profile was used, and you never got prompted if you wanted to import the Netscape bookamrks.

bug 264209 or bug 257664 ?

Click Start -> Run -> type: %appdata%
Windows will show you the Application Data folder of the current user.
From that folder remove every Phoenix, Firefox and Mozilla folder that you see.

I say:
While bug 264209 addresses the problem, it does not give a solution. For mere mortals, there is no way to reimport old Netscape/IE bookmarks on a reinstall. I solved the problem by using Windows Find searching for any occurrence of "Firefox" and delteing all references. This removed the old Firefox personal settings.

Go to "File" and click "Import." Firefox will then ask you from which application to import. Select whichever one you want to import from and follow the prompts. Do this for however many other browsers as you need to. There's your solution.
Not an installer bug... this is a first run migration bug so over to Migration.

Summary: Bookmarks do not copy when installing if older version of Firefox was previously uninstalled → Bookmarks do not copy when migrating if older version of Firefox was previously uninstalled
Does this still happen with Firefox 3.6 or later?
Version: unspecified → 1.5.0.x Branch
No reply, INCOMPLETE. Please retest with Firefox 3.6.x or later and a new profile (http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Managing+profiles). If you continue to see this issue with the newest firefox and a new profile, then please comment on this bug.
