Have your bookmarks shown on the toolbar. Have the entries contain sub catalogs as well.
Navigate to such a sub catalog, and choose OPEN IN TABS --> result is that in some cases, it opens all the bookmarks from the MAIN catalog, instead of the sub-catalog.
Major functionality broken (accessing bookmarks).
On a further note: clicking on an individual bookmark from the subfolder doesn't do anything at all.

possibly. I looked at your bug, but in your case it didn't do anything, and in my case it opened the /wrong/ bookmarks. But yeah, the cause may be the same.
In my case, the behavior is intermittent, but your problem reproduces reliably?

Bug 451915 - move Firefox/Places bugs to Firefox/Bookmarks and History. Remove all bugspam from this move by filtering for the string "places-to-b-and-h".
In Thunderbird 3.0b, you do that as follows:
Tools | Message Filters
Make sure the correct account is selected. Click "New"
Conditions: Body contains places-to-b-and-h
Change the action to "Delete Message".
Select "Manually Run" from the dropdown at the top.
Click OK.
Select the filter in the list, make sure "Inbox" is selected at the bottom, and click "Run Now". This should delete all the bugspam. You can then delete the filter.
