A tag management system should be implemented in Thunderbird, allowing e-mails to be tagged with user-supplied values such as 'Personal', 'Business', 'Friends', 'Registrations' etc etc. Searches must also support tags, allowing more intelligent semantics to be applied to them.

A simple way to display messages across all folders, which match these tags should be implemented, to allow easy access to e-mails to the same degree as Google Mail.

Internally this feature could be implemented using IMAPv4 permanent flags as described in RFC 3501.

Wouldn't it be great if GMail eventually exported mailboxes using IMAP, with tags implemented as permanent flags?

Reproducible: Always
that work is going on in bug 114656
