peery, suggest you visit the forums for help http://forums.mozillazine.org/ you may have a corrupted index file or problem related to installation, mail server/ISP or preferences. delete inbox.msf in your profile and see what happens. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder Also, version 1.0.7 is much too old to be reporting a problem against. You should pick up v1.5.0.4.
