Just like any search toolbar, the Firefox one also needs a history so a user can just click a dropdown list and select a previous search. It should also start searching for the keyword(s) entered automatically when the user selects a new search engine from the engine list. It currently just sits there after you select a new engine requiring you to hit enter again. Maybe make these options in the preference list so everyone is happy?

The search box does have a history dropdown. Press the down arrow in the search box, or start typing something, and you'll see previous searches.

Click-to-search has been proposed as a possible improvement (see discussion in mozilla.dev.apps.firefox).

Which option am I not having selected?

I think by now I would of noticed prevous serches showing up as I began typing. ;)

When I type something, including search terms I know I've done just last night, nothing happens. Pressing the down arrow also is doing nothing.

Under Tools|Options|Advanced|General I have also tried selecteing/unselecting the option: Begin finding as you begin typing.

Nothing. I can create a video showing this to you if you don't believe me.

You probably have "Save information I enter in forms and the Search Bar." unchecked in Tools->Options->Privacy->Saved Forms.

Maybe you have "Clear private data at closedown" (or whatever it is called), and your choice of Private Data includes "Saved Form and Search History"?
